Lee Marvin

Lee Marvin, actor, was born on Feb. 19, 1924 in New York City. Marvin was thrown out of dozens of schools during his youth. After the last time, he joined the U.S. Marines. It was the beginning of World War II. He was shot in the butt during the Battle of Saipan (June, 1944), severing his sciatic nerve, and received a medical discharge.

He finally recovered enough to get a job as a plumbers helper in Woodstock, New York. One day he was working on a broken toilet at the local community theatre. One of the actors failed to show up for a rehearsal, so he filled in. And he was hooked on acting.

Lee Marvin went off to New York City and took whatever roles he could get in off-Broadway productions. Soon he was acting on Broadway. And that was followed by sporadic roles in TV productions. That's when he headed acrosss the country to Hollywood.

He received an Oscar for his role as a drunken gunfighter in the Western comedy, "Cat Ballou" (1965). His other Western movie credits included Hangman's Knot (1952), The Duel at Silver Creek (1952), The Stranger Wore a Gun (1953), Gun Fury (1953), The Comancheros (1961), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), The Meanest Men in the West (1967, TV), Paint Your Wagon (1969), Monte Walsh (1970), Pocket Money (1972) and Great Scout and Cathouse Thursday (1976).

His TV Western series appearances included The Virginians, Wagon Train and Bonanza.


Charles Bronson & Lee Marvin

Lee Marvin died of a heart attack in Tucson, AZ., on Aug. 29, 1987. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.

Dee Marvine


Dee Marvine left a job in Chicago as a magazine writer/editor to move to the wide open spaces of Montana and to write novels. Her books include Last Chance (Doubleday, 1993), To Chin the Moon, Sweet Grass, and Out of Focus.


Benny Martinez


Benny Martinez and his wife Rosa travel extensively as they demonstrate the roping skills of the vaquero. Dressed in period vaquero costumes, they delight both old and young with their trick roping skills and horsemanship. They regularly appear at the Santa Clarita (Calif.) Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival in the spring of each year.

Benny has performed for 20 years at the Rose Parade. Some of his other appearances have included the Will Roger's 100th Birthday Celebration, Six Flags Amusement Park, Gene Autry's Melody Ranch, Disneyland, Branson, MO., and the Dixie Stampede in Las Vegas.


Tim Mason

Dr. Tim Mason holds degrees from Abilene Christian University, Texas Tech University and Texas A & M. He taught ag courses at the university level for 19 years, and he worked as an agricultural nuitritionist for another 15.

He began writing cowboy poetry many years ago, and he has appeared at over 40 different cowboy poetry gatherings around the country.

Ellen Gray Massey


Ellen Gray Massey was born near Nevada, MO. Ellen Gray Massey received her B.A. in English and history from the University of Maryland in 1943. In 1945 she received a B.S. in home economics from the University of Missouri. She was an assistant extension agent in St. Francois County, than a home agent in Laclede County. In 1957 she started a new career as a teacher and retired in 1983.

She is the author of a biography, Candle Within Her Soul: Mary Elizabeth Mahnkey and Her Ozarks, 1877-1948 (Bittersweet, Inc., 1996).

Ellen Gray Massey's novels for Avalon press include Moon Silver (1991), Too Many Secrets (1992), The Bequest(1993), A Grave Situation (1994), and Equestricat).Her book, Bittersweet Earth, was published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 1986. In 1996 Massey was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in Career Achievement from Drury College and was inducted into the Writers Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mo. (She her photo and a profile of her by Kathleen Van Buskirk in the Roundup Magazine for Feb., 1977, p. 39).
