In 2004 the State of Tennessee named David Nelson as the official "Cowboy Poet Laureate of Tennessee". The certificate marking that honor read in part: "This lifetime honor is given in recognition for his laudable service to Tennessee and his numerous contributions to Cowboy Poetry and Storytelling in the finest traditions of the American Cowboy."
